Is This Training Right for You?

This training is designed for adults who are preparing to serve as a chaperone for a youth participating in a Juvenile Sex Offender Treatment Program (SOTP). You may be here because a treatment provider referred you, or because you recognized on your own that this role requires preparation. Either way, you are in the right place.

Supervising a juvenile is different from supervising an adult. You are not only supporting treatment and community safety; you are also guiding a young person through a developmental stage while maintaining structure, supervision, and trust within your family. This course speaks directly to that reality.

This training is for you if:

  • You are a parent, guardian, relative, or designated adult preparing to serve in a formal chaperone role for a juvenile
  • You have been referred to complete chaperone training by a treatment provider, juvenile probation officer, or the court
  • You want to understand your responsibilities, legal obligations, and boundaries before signing a chaperone contract
  • You are committed to supporting both community safety and the youth's treatment and healthy development

This training is appropriate for chaperones working with any juvenile SOTP program, regardless of which treatment provider is working with the youth in treatment.

What You Will Learn

Your Role and Responsibilities

Understand exactly what a juvenile chaperone is and is not, what your core duties are, and how you fit into the treatment team alongside the therapist, the family, and the supervising officer.

Safety and Risk Management

Learn to recognize warning signs, identify high-risk situations and settings (including those common to youth, such as school, social media, and contact with younger children), support the safety plan, and respond appropriately in an emergency.

The Legal Framework and Compliance

Understand the legal obligations, mandatory reporting requirements, confidentiality rules, and the consequences of non-compliance that apply to your role as the chaperone of a minor.

The ChaperoneĀ Agreement

Walk through the chaperoneĀ agreement section by section so you know exactly what you are agreeing to before you meet with the treatment provider and the supervising officer.

Live Q&A Session with a Facilitator

Every enrollee completes a required live session with a trained facilitator from SOTP Training Institute to review the material and address your specific questions.

How the Training Works

Step 1 — Enroll and Access the Course

Complete your enrollment and gain immediate access to the course. Download your Juvenile Chaperone Training Manual and begin at your own pace.

Step 2 — Complete the Content Modules

Work through the content modules covering roles and responsibilities, safety and risk management, legal compliance, supervision within the family, and the chaperone agreement. Each module includes a video lesson, reading material, and a short quiz. You must pass each quiz at 80% or higher before advancing. Retakes are unlimited.

Step 3 — Attend Your Live Facilitator Session

After completing the content modules, you will attend a required live session with a facilitator from SOTP Training Institute. This is your opportunity to ask questions and get direct guidance. Your final assessment will not unlock until this session is complete.

Step 4 — Pass the Final Assessment

Complete a comprehensive final assessment covering all course content. A score of 80% or higher is required. Retakes are unlimited.

Step 5 — Receive Your Certificate of Completion

Upon passing the final assessment, your Certificate of Completion is generated automatically. Bring this certificate to the youth's treatment provider as documentation that you have completed the required chaperone training.

What This Training Does and Does Not Do

This training certifies that you have completed the educational requirements for the juvenile chaperone role. It does not replace the formal chaperone contract process.

The chaperone contract, which makes your role official, is completed separately with the youth's therapist or treatment provider, the family, and the supervising officer. That process happens outside of this course and is specific to the youth's case. Your Certificate of Completion is the document you bring to that meeting as proof of training.

If you have questions about the contract process or the specific requirements of the treatment program, contact the treatment provider or supervising officer directly.
